If you’re anything like me, your closet probably gets a little crazy from time to time… okay more realistically, most of the time. I get it, I’m with you, let’s get organized together.
Step 1: empty
Go to your closet, look at it, and breathe for a moment… Okay now take everything out. EVERYTHING!!! We want a blank canvas. No shirts left behind. Toss it all on your bed or stack it on your floor, whatever you have to do.
Step 2: clean
Wipe down any surfaces, cubicles, poles, etc you have in there. We want it all clean and dust free. After, vacuum or sweep the floors so they’re nice and clean too. Now that your closet is spick-and-span you can start putting your stuff back in there.
Step 3: brainstorm
There’s a lot of different ways you can organize your closet clothes. You could do it by category: work, casual, going out, formal, etc. By size: tops, shorts, t-shirts, skirts, long sleeves, dresses, cardigans, pants, etc. Or, my personal favorite, by color: good ole ROYGBIV (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet). Pick what works best for your closet’s shape and size.
Step 4: action
Once you have a good idea of what you want your new and improved closet to look like, it’s time to bring your vision to life. This is the perfect time to discard any old clothing items you want to sell, donate, or throw away. Really ask yourself, “when was the last time I wore this? When would I wear it again? How often will I actually wear this?” Don’t hold onto shirts with holes and stains, you don’t need it I promise.
Make sure 1) when you are putting the hangers back that you’re keeping all the hangers the same way. This will make your closet look uniform. and 2) that the clothes are all facing you when you’re looking at your closet. You will find things much faster this way.
Step 5: details
Now that you have allllll your clothes back into your closet, put any left over hangers in one area. That way if you get new clothes, you can pull from those hangers instead of searching for a miscellaneous hanger hidden within all your clothes. When all of your clothing items have a specific place, this makes it super easy to hang your laundry back up because there will be an empty hanger in the place where you pulled it from.
Final thoughts
I’ve been putting off cleaning and organizing my closet because my brain chalked it up to be this huge, time-consuming event…
People, It took me one hour! I repeat, ONE HOUR! I will say, I was zooming on 2 cups of coffee, but if I knew this daunting task would only take one hour, I would’ve done it months ago! I usually do a big closet reset in the spring and fall because I will put my summer clothes away in the winter and vice versa, but my closet needed to be refreshed a little sooner. Nevertheless, this will just make it super easy on me in April-ish when I switch all my spring/summer clothes in.
Leave a comment with how often you reset your closet and if it needs a little organization right now, too.
