How to Build Cleaning Habits

Let’s get cleaning

“Clean your space, Clear your mind”

It’s probably not a surprise to you that having a clean, organized environment helps keep your mind clear and organized, too. There are 5 easy daily cleaning habits that will help keep your space organized and tidy.

Make your bed

Do this EVERY DAY! It takes 2 minutes to do and it a key component that differentiates a clean room from a dirty room. This cleaning habit, I do first thing in the morning, check out my full morning routine here. Not only does it make your room look put together, it also prevents you from crawling back into bed. Plus, it feels so good jumping into a made bed at night.

Put away 5 things

The next cleaning habit is putting away 5 things. For example, this could be throwing away 5 things in your room, picking 5 pieces of clothing off the ground, or a mixture of 5 different things. Really whatever your room needs that day. This is an amazing hack to clean your room at an attainable pace and avoid getting overwhelmed. Even once your room is clean, this is a great hack to keep it clean.

Organize for 10 minutes

Set a 10 minute timer and start organizing! This could be a chair in your room you throw clothes on, a corner in your room, section of your closet, under your bed, etc. Similar to the last, this is an attainable way to clean your space gradually. Just commit to 10 minutes! At the end of the timer you can stop or if you want to proceed to finish the whole task, that is a bonus!

Load/Unload the dishwasher

Next, dishes are one of those tasks we all love to push off until there is a pile of grimy, smelly dishes overflowing the sink. It doesn’t have to be that way. Rinsing and loading your dishes right after using them is a game changing habit! There really never has to be dishes in the sink. If the dishwasher is clean, unload it and put the few dirty dishes in the dishwasher. If the dishwasher is still going, hand clean the few dirty dishes and lay them out to dry. That way all the dishes will be done at the same time.

If you’re someone that dreads unloading the dishwasher, put on music or listen to a podcast, and you’ll be done before you know it.

Wipe surfaces/countertops

Lastly, wipe your countertops! Dust, crumbs and bacteria will accumulate if you don’t regularly wipe your surfaces. This is a quick 2 second task you can do right after dinner. This will leave your areas smelling fresh and clean.
