“Write self-affirmations.” If you’ve ever heard that and thought ‘what the heck does that mean?’ Stay tuned because all your questions will be answered here. Affirmations are defined as emotional support or encouragement. As humans, we naturally crave words of affirmations. It is one of the main five love languages! However, you cannot always count on others to give this to you, so you must learn how to affirm yourself. By intentionally writing down 3-10 affirmations everyday, this changes how you speak to yourself in your head throughout the day.

I think a lot of people think self-affirmations are a bunch of mumbo jumbo, but let me explain the psychology behind it. Your mind likes to prove itself right. For example, if you often call yourself “dumb”, your brain is going to latch onto times that you’ve failed a test, stated something wrong, or made a mistake. Disregarding all the evidence that backs up that you’re smart.

Alternatively, this is why the “lucky girl syndrome” works. If you often call yourself “lucky”, your brain is going to think about all the times you’ve won a prize or an outcome went the way you had hoped. Use this to your advantage! Self-affirmations are literally a way to reprogram your mind into being nicer to yourself.
